Histories,
carried in colour.
Cypriot artist Havva Malyalizade paints the stories of the women in her family: memory, migration, and everything left unsaid. For this collaboration we have taken close details from her original canvases and made them into prints, so each fragment of her archive can find a home of its own.
From her canvases
“To exist is to carry histories, written and unwritten on one’s body.”
Havva Malyalizade is a Cypriot artist based in the Netherlands. Her practice sits where memory, identity and cultural displacement meet. It begins with the personal stories of the women in her family, within the Turkish Cypriot community, and reaches out to wider stories of diaspora.
She sees her work as a form of resistance and reconciliation, a way of documenting oral histories that were never written down. Each painting becomes a ritual of restoring and understanding the women who came before her: an intimate archive of rupture and continuity, of ancestral echo and personal belonging.
Fragments of a larger story.
Each print is a detail taken from one of Havva Malyalizade's original canvases, cut close and chosen together with her.
Faces, braids, children, palms and quiet figures: small pieces of a larger archive, made to live on your walls.
