What works with Large Wall Art
Know when to go large — and when not to. Large-format art works best when the wall has room to breathe around it. The classic application is the sofa wall in a living room: a single oversized print or canvas centred above the sofa, with at least 6–8 inches of clear wall visible above the art and on either side. Stairwells are another brilliant location — a tall portrait print hung on the wall alongside the staircase creates a dramatic, gallery-like effect as you move through the space. Open-plan kitchen-diners are a third: a large statement piece in the sitting area anchors it and visually separates it from the kitchen without a wall.
Single statement versus gallery wall — how to choose. One large print is bold and decisive. It makes a statement without requiring you to think about arrangement, spacing, or visual harmony between multiple pieces. A gallery wall of large prints (say, two or three pieces grouped together) can be equally striking but requires more planning. The rule of thumb: if you're unsure, go for a single statement piece. It's harder to get wrong and tends to age better. If you want a gallery wall, keep the frames consistent and plan the arrangement on the floor before you put a single hole in the wall.
Scale, subject matter, and your room's colour palette. Large art has more presence, which means its subject matter and palette have more influence on how the room feels. A large abstract in deep blues and greens will shift the whole tone of a room. A large black-and-white photograph will add drama and sophistication. A large botanical print will bring in warmth and nature. Think about what feeling you want the room to have, then choose art that supports it — rather than choosing art you like in isolation and hoping it fits.

Sizing for Large Walls

For a double-height stairwell, a portrait-format 24×40″ or 28×48″ works beautifully. If you're filling an entire accent wall in an open-plan space, consider going to our largest sizes (36×48″ or 40×60″) — at this scale, the art becomes architecture. Always measure your wall and mock up the size with newspaper or lining paper before ordering; what seems huge in a shop often looks perfectly proportioned at home.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hanging large art too high. The centre of any artwork should sit at roughly eye level — around 57–60 inches from the floor. Large art hung too high disconnects it from the furniture and feels awkward. If in doubt, go lower than you think.
- Choosing a frame that competes with the art. At large scale, an overly ornate or brightly coloured frame can fight with the image itself. A simple natural wood or thin metal frame (or a frameless canvas) lets the art do the talking.
- Underestimating the weight of large canvases. A large canvas or heavy framed print needs proper wall fixings — not command strips or picture hooks rated for 5kg.
